Short answer
- You don’t need experience to start. The BLS lists “None” as the work experience typically needed for project management specialists; the typical entry requirement is a bachelor’s degree (BLS).
- The credential built for beginners is the CAPM from PMI: no project experience, 23 hours of project management education, $300 ($225 for PMI members) (PMI).
- The PMP comes later. It requires 36 months of project experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 60 months with a high school diploma.
- Keep the CAPM active until then: an active CAPM “also fulfills PMP training requirements,” which replaces the PMP’s 35 training hours (PMI).
The top search results for this question mostly give general advice: build skills, find a mentor, network (our check on September 22, 2026). That’s all useful, but it leaves out the credentials, what they require and what they cost. This guide lays out the path from zero experience to the PMP, with the fees PMI charges, the education hours you need and the time each step takes. The path from zero experience to PMP

Why the CAPM, and not the PMP, is the first step
The PMP is closed to beginners: PMI asks for 36 months of experience leading projects within the last ten years if you have a bachelor’s degree, 48 months with an associate degree, and 60 months with a high school diploma. The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI’s entry-level certification. It asks for education, not experience.
The CAPM pays off twice if you keep it:
- Now: it shows an employer that you know the vocabulary and the methods, before you’ve led a project.
- Later: an active CAPM replaces the 35 hours of training the PMP otherwise requires. From December 1, 2026, live classes (in person or online) only count toward those 35 hours if they come from a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited university program; self-paced courses from any provider still count.
The catch is the word active: if the CAPM lapses before you’re eligible for the PMP, the waiver goes with it. Renewal costs $150 ($60 for members) and 15 professional development units every three years.
Where the 23 hours can come from
PMI requires 23 hours of project management education before the CAPM exam and doesn’t set a price for them. One option is the Google Project Management Professional Certificate on Coursera:
- Length: “6 months at 10 hours a week,” according to the program page, with no degree or experience required.
- Cost: $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day trial, so about $294 over six months.
- Hours: Coursera says it “qualifies you for over 100 hours of project management education” and helps prepare you for PMI certifications such as the CAPM.
- College credit: an ACE recommendation for up to 9 college credits.

Note the wording: Coursera says the certificate helps prepare you for the CAPM; we found no PMI statement that names the Google certificate. If you plan to count it toward the 23 hours, keep your completion record and course hours for the CAPM application. The Google certificate is also a credential in its own right, but it’s a course certificate from Google, not a certification exam administered by an independent body like PMI.
Getting the experience the PMP needs
The BLS notes that “some positions require project management specialists to have relevant work experience,” and that candidates may gain it “as business analysts, information security analysts, training and development specialists, or in other related occupations” (BLS). The PMP counts experience leading projects, so the goal is project work you lead and can document. Useful ways to build it:
- Take the project parts of your current job: planning, schedules, status reports, budgets.
- Apply for coordinator or assistant roles on project teams.
- Volunteer to run a defined project with a start, an end and a deliverable, and document it.
Write down dates, your role and the deliverables as you go. Reconstructing three years of projects when you apply for the PMP is harder than keeping notes now.
